I really thought it was Thursday...

Is it really only Tuesday?? I was sitting at my desk at school this morning and I had a moment when I genuinely did not know what day it was-- although I was sure it had to be closer to Friday... but no. Alas, it is only Tuesday. But you know what that makes tomorrow? Wednesday! Yep, Hump Day. And I may or may not be the teacher who showed her students the Geico-Camel-Hump Day commercial which caused seemingly endless exclamations about hump day throughout the hallways for the rest of the week... But I'm not admitting anything. Nope, not me. However, I will share a link to watch the commercial on YouTube:

Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any subsequent videos about hump day you are sucked into watching once there. Also, I do not take responsibility for any camel quotes you or your loved ones feel the need to repeat for the next three days.

Now, I'm off to eat the steak, potatoes, and carrots Hubs grilled for dinner...

Sometimes...

"You win some, you lose some, sometimes you get D's." -Daniel McClure

That's how I feel right now. I’ve already failed. I told myself I was going to do it this time, but I didn’t. Are we surprised? No. I knew it would happen like this… I wrote three posts and stopped. For three weeks. And I’m sorry. I promise I’m going to try to be more reliable!

So, let’s catch up, shall we? Ok, great!

School started August 21st for the kids, and it’s been good so far. A little hectic and definitely exhausting… but good. I teach three different subjects and have six classes each day with students from grades 9-12, so my days are never boring. I’m usually ready to go home by the end of the day, but I’m also enjoying my classes so far.

This was after my first day of school last year-- AKA my first day of teaching ever.
(I didn't take a first day picture this year.)

My best friend got MARRIED August 31st!!! It was a lot of fun, and she looked beautiful! I'm so happy she has found the man of her dreams! She’s currently still on her honeymoon (I’m super jealous), but here is a collage of a few pictures I managed to snap in between all the craziness and fun.

We've been really busy lately, so the hubs and I are enjoying this weekend just hanging out with family. We went to dinner with his grandparents last night, just got back from the creek with my parents, and are going to the county fair and my cousin’s new house tomorrow. I still have papers to grade and some house cleaning to do before tomorrow night, but I’m determined to make this weekend a fun, relaxing one.

Hope you’re having a great weekend!

Quick Update

I have some time between meetings/training earlier and open house tonight, so I thought I’d write a quick post with some clarification: Although I am sad that summer is over and am not entirely prepared for this school year, I do like my job and am looking forward to a new year. I work with amazing people, and our school is making some exciting changes this year!

The start of the school year has always been a happy time in my life. It means new people, clothes, office supplies…

I have a thing for office supplies. It’s like a weakness; it’s hard to go to the store without looking at them and longing for new ones. I also get super excited about buying my planner every summer! (Yes, I still use a paper planner.) As soon as I get home, I sit down and fill in important dates. Hubs thinks I’m crazy. I will admit that my love of office supplies is probably not normal, but I don’t see the harm in it. Therefore, my obsession lives on!

Now it’s time to get ready to head back to school. Hope you’re having a great Monday!

Because it's Sunday...

Because it's Sunday and the finale of True Blood, I thought it would be a good idea to show you some pictures of our dog. So, here's a quick look at Sookie's life so far...

The day she came home. She was 5 weeks and 2 days old--such a sweet, tiny baby. November 2012.

 Just sleeping in her bed.

Playing by the barn at the new house.

Cuddling with Cory.

Her favorite toys as a baby: the hedgehog and rope/balls.

Playing outside in the leaves with me.

Napping while Cory worked on the new house.

Watching Cory work on the new house.

Playing in the sand.

Napping on the couch in the basement. December 2012.

Playing outside with Cory.

Riding across the farm.

Her first snow. January 2013.

Just hanging out.

Playing under the bed.

Eating an entire sausage biscuit in one bite.

Three months apart.

Riding in the jeep. Two months vs four months.

Almost finished with the new house! February 2013.

Cuddling with Cory in our house. March 2013.

Playing in the flood water in our front yard. April 2013.

They're best friends. May 2013.

She loves to go swimming at the creek! July 2013.

Playing with her favorite toy: the rope. August 2013.

I now realize this is not a quick look. Sorry for the picture overload! Is it obvious we don't have human children yet? I mean, you should see the pictures I had to wade through to choose these...

Well, that's it for now, but I promise this is not the end of my Sookie pictures! ;)

And So It Begins...

I officially start my second year of teaching tomorrow. TOMORROW. This is not a “The sun’ll come out, tomorrow” kind of tomorrow. This is a “Holy crap! Where has summer gone?? It’s back to grown up reality—womp, womp” kind of tomorrow. Am I ready? No. Did I accomplish everything I planned to over summer break? Absolutely not.  Am I freaking out? Only a little. It’s ok. My friends and family can tell you that I am not one to panic. I am always the calm one. I tend to have a ‘don’t worry, it’ll be fine’ attitude toward most things. So I just keep telling myself that I still have plenty of time to do that list of things that haunts me from the desk. Besides, the kids don’t come until Wednesday, so I have plenty of time to fall into panic/depression.

On a happier/more exciting note… My best friend is getting married in 16 DAYS!!!!! I am beyond happy for her. She is seriously one of the nicest and most beautiful people you will ever meet, and I am so glad she has found this amazing guy that loves her like she deserves. (Congrats Homes!) AND she is coming to visit me tomorrow! :)

Since this is my very first blog post, I think it’s only fair to tell you a little about myself. My name is Martha, and I live in my hometown on my husband’s family’s farm with my husband (Cory), our dog (Sookie—pronounced like Sookie from True Blood, not Sookie from Gilmore Girls), and my husband’s grandparents (Dave & Sue). I work at my old high school where I teach Senior English and Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS). [I feel that I must warn you that my teaching English does not mean that I am a great writer. My degree is in FACS, so please forgive any and all future writing errors.] My husband is almost finished with classes for his bachelor’s degree and works part-time with his dad for their commercial construction company.

The name of my blog comes from the name of the farm where we live: Brook Hill Farm. I want this to be a record of our everyday life—the big moments and the small ones. This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, but I tend to not stick with diaries and stuff like that. However, I’m hoping that putting it on the internet and telling people about it will help me actually write on a regular basis.

If you’ve actually read this whole thing, thank you and congratulations for making it all the way through! I hope you’ll continue to stop by and see what’s going on in our Life at Brook Hill.
